20.08.2004

A couple of weeks ago the US dollar started its slow, but confident ascent. Which factors have influenced its behaviour and for how long is this long awaited event going to last? 338

Growth disease

30.07.2004

The economy of Kazakhstan has grown by 9 per cent in the first half year. It seems that the most optimistic predictions of local experts about the development of our country in this year come true. The pessimism of several financial institutions is not justified in practice, but the country has to diversify its economy - not only because of their recommendations, but on its own volition. 303

It is impossible to ignore the construction boom in different towns of the republic. Although one sees mainly elite houses, comfortable multi-storey buildings and cottages, unaffordable for an average Kazakhstani, common houses, shops, and roads are also being built up. 329

Shall we escape the "Dutch disease"?

31.03.2004

Sceptics who were predicting "bright future" for Kazakhstan only in the nearest two or three decades, until our hydrocarbon resources are required on the world market, have lost. 1878

Does leasing resolve all problems?

19.03.2004

Another foreign word is becoming firmly rooted in the vocabulary of the business circles of our republic. It has come here fairly recently, but somewhat uncertain and unconvincing. 455

In the labyrinths of modernisation

18.02.2004

The programme of industrial-innovative development of Kazakhstan, adopted by the government, is, in its essence, an attempt of radical modernisation of the country economy, an attempt to get away from "oil" money and the infamous "Dutch disease", to teach the economy how to survive in the conditions of harsh competition on the world market. 586

Neither their meat, nor our bread!

02.02.2004

What we can love our ministers for is their clarity. Until they say something, all - journalists, experts, and simply observers - all wander in the darkness of presuppositions and versions. And if a head of some state authority says something, all becomes clear right away. 316

Lack of attention towards the main thing

30.01.2004

During the last few years, after the stabilisation of economic situation in the country due to incomes from high oil prices, a problem of search for such areas of economy, which would be able to give Kazakhstan a possibility to become less dependant on the export of raw materials, has become relevant. 320

Our streams of gold...

28.01.2004

A round table, dedicated to problems of the market of precious metals took place in Almaty recently. 356

Stanzas about finances

16.01.2004

2003 was surprisingly "unyielding". Many of the forecasts that were made in its beginning have not come true. 294

Crisis instead of consortium

12.12.2003

Bad news came last week unexpectedly as a thunder on clear, although winter, skies - the forthcoming winter can very difficult for the South of Kazakhstan with regard to electric power supply. 270

Changing course

International financial organisations are paying more and more attention to Kazakhstan and Central Asia in general. 582

31.10.2003

What will support the economy of Kazakhstan, when oil reserves in the republic are about to finish? What will the biggest part of labouring population occupy itself with? 475

What's next about friendship..?

30.09.2003

Kazakhstani raw materials continue to flow to China. All or nearly all economists, at least those who are not engaged politically, say that the Kazakhstani economy depends on the export of raw materials too much. 316

You reap what you sow

17.09.2003

Russian agricultural equipment producers are trying to get hold of Kazakhstani market. A specially created for that purpose company "Agromashholding" aspires to renew our fleet of agricultural machines in the recent few years. 340

Tax burden

15.09.2003

A relief from the tax burden, about which the people dreams traditionally, and about which businessmen are afraid to even think, must take place in Kazakhstan as from 1 January, 2004. 324

Economic growth in Central Asia

05.09.2003

A growth in the economic development is observed in the last three years in the majority of CIS countries. Of course, in some countries the economy is developing reaching international standards, in others - it only tries to get to the level of the 1990s. 415

03.09.2003

They tried to resolve problems of the countries not having an access to sea in Almaty. 286

Struggles for bread

29.08.2003

There are struggles for harvest in Kazakhstan, literally. The forecasted big grain harvest does not leave anyone in peace. Everybody from a simple peasant to high rank officials and even people who are quite outside of the agriculture rush to exploit the situation. The current harvest promises millions and even billions. 353

Economic forecasts

01.08.2003

They say that making forecasts is no good business. But even serious state authorities do it. They forecast not only the weather, but also things that are much more serious: for instance, the inflation or the GDP. 336

Contradictory tendencies in transport

30.07.2003

The Kazakhstani transport area goes through some hard times – on the one hand a sure growth, on the other hand remaining problems, whose beginning has a long history. 317

Forecasts and threats

07.07.2003

According to the preliminary forecasts of the Ministry of Agriculture, published recently, the current harvest of grain this autumn is unlikely to exceed the last year record and it will make 12-12.5 million tons. It is not a bad result, if we consider that the spring this year was long, cold and the sowing campaign was protracted by two weeks in average. But the weather made a gift: during the growth of corn in the majority of grain sowing regions rains fell at the right time and the plants got strength. If we are lucky in July one or two good rains will fall and then warm summer weather will settle, in this case, grain growers believe, a good harvest can be expected. 308

Will Europe open its markets?

25.06.2003

The European Union is ready to develop its dialogue with Kazakhstan. Politicians and diplomats from Western countries at last realised that the heart of Central Asia - Kazakhstan - represents a grand interest as a country of big resources and big possibilities. However, the political interests must always be economically supported. 307

A cobweb of alternatives

16.06.2003

An active development of oil production in Kazakhstan that has become the main "locomotive" of the whole Kazakhstani economy, makes the problem of hydrocarbons export to the international markets more acute for the state. 332

Unrealised ideas passional

28.05.2003

These days two events seemingly unrelated between each other, but actually related very closely, took place. The first event was the round table, dedicated to Kazakhstani mechanical engineering through the participation of national enterprises in the oil production projects supply. 320

SARS vs. the consumption market

16.05.2003

To prevent oneself from disease is only a half of the whole business… Due to the fact that the dispersal of SARS in China fails to be taken under control, Kazakhstan had to close its border with this country following Russia. 331

Professional agricultural management

14.05.2003

It's a paradox, but still a fact: the state in the recent years is quite generous with subsidies for cattle-breeders and grain-growers. Sometimes there is more money allocated, than the agricultural workers and "contractors" can handle. 390

Strange arithmetics

18.04.2003

Our economy, confidently following its course, can suddenly take a list. But, it appears that the "reefs" in the form of costs and an inefficient usage of funds from the State budget are not so deadly for it. 379

Currency for the penniless

11.04.2003

The issue of single currency occupies the minds of economists and politicians. The statement, made a little more than a month ago in Moscow, now takes a concrete shape. And although there are at least 8 years until the "х" hour, passions around the future unitary currency are already heated. 422

Remembering Paracelsus

09.04.2003

The future of pharmaceutical industry seems to be obscure. The industrial growth of the last years in Kazakhstan influenced various industries in various degree. If mechanical engineering and food industry did show good results for some time, the same cannot be said about medical and pharmaceutical industry. 274

And the money flow past

27.03.2003

Kazakhstani companies must consolidate in their struggle for large investments. 279

On land ownership again

03.03.2003

Tractor's insistence

19.02.2003

... is needed for Kazakhstan to enter the foreign markets of agricultural equipment. 317

Capital outflow

05.02.2003

Ministers of finance of European Union countries, worried about the outburst of terrorism and a weakening bank control over financial flows, decided to cancel the bank secrecy and in due time to abolish all anonymous accounts. 374

Southern threat

03.02.2003

Economic reforms in Uzbekistan can complicate the situation in the Southern regions of Kazakhstan. The situation on the border between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan attracts more and more attention, because it is the first time that the Republic has encountered such a lasting and unpleasant problem. 237

Out of the shadows

15.01.2003

In Russia in the nearest future a war will be declared to "black" and "grey" treasuries, through which the salaries are being paid in cash. 332

Industrialisation

08.11.2002

Quite soon Kazakhstan will enter a new era of its development. For the first time an industrial policy will be accepted in our country. And that shows the maturity of the State authority, its capacity, or rather, its wish to advance the industry a step further. 335

Obsolete carriages

Ageing of carriage and locomotive park on the railway has become a big economic problem. 274

These dusty roads

22.10.2002

The condition of the existing roads network in the country requires much more attention than it has currently. 328

Unsafe railway

21.10.2002

The safety of railway shipments is becoming a serious problem. There is a famous aphorism that the roads, motorways as well as railways, are veins and arteries of the economy. Hence it can be said that the condition of Kazakhstani economy demands an increased attention - its "arteries" are not quite all right. 338

Transit potential

10.10.2002

In August and September of this year the events took place at the Far East, which at a first glance don't have anything to do with Kazakhstan, but actually can influence the interests of one of the most important economic areas - transport. 294

Gold streams

09.10.2002

Along with oil, copper, chromite and iron ores gold is one of the main natural wealths of Kazakhstan. 353

Tree by tree

25.09.2002

At first sight, such production and economic notions as "furniture", "woodworking" industry and Kazakhstan have very little in common. It is known that the Republic, to say the least, is not rich with the industrial wood reserves, and without a serious raw material base, it would seem, there's no serious production. 319

Aluminium industry today

24.09.2002

Metal industry, which traditionally was one of the bases of Kazakhstani economy, currently takes an especial significance: oscillations of oil prices on the world markets must be somehow compensated for the sake of stability of economy and the metal industry is exactly the area, Kazakhstan should count for the development of. 379

Our mineral wealth

23.09.2002

Ten-twelve years ago, right before the collapse of the USSR or soon after that, in Kazakhstani mass media the discussions on the bases for the independent economy were popular. It wasn't talked too much about oil, but various mineral resources, with which the Republic's subsurface is rich were remembered quite often. Very often one phrase was repeated at various levels, in one or another interpretation: "We've got the whole Mendeleyev's table!". 418

Grain crisis

20.09.2002

The last harvest was not needed. Peasants sound alarm. The situation at the grain purchase market in Kazakhstan is not favourable for the agricultural producers for the second year already. 346

Privatising Kyrgyzstan

17.09.2002

What the idle analysts and clever political scientists used to talk about started little by large materialising in our almost native Kyrgyzstan. One of the largest banks of our country bought one of the largest banks of the neighbouring country. Vast economic expansion against our Kyrgyz brothers has started… 326

How many roads...

04.09.2002

History of the roads construction area during the years of independence of Kazakhstan is one of the most dramatic pages in the development of the whole transport area. During the ten years, this area experienced a complete collapse of any interest towards itself, having nearly degraded as a system, and then another outburst of interest and hope of large scale resurrection. 371

Import substitution a la Kazakh

22.08.2002

All Kazakhstani companies that are worth anything rushed to Karachaganak as one. Gas condensate field in West Kazakhstan became a certain panacea for the national commodity producers. Each one tries to sell his production here starting from mineral water, bread and ending with pipes and furnaces. And the news that Karachaganak Integrated Organisation is heading Import Substitution Committee by Kazakhstan Petroleum Association (KPA) encouraged our enterprising people even more. Anyway foreigners will have to play according to the rules and seek Kazakhstani enterprises cooperation. 398

Cardan killing roads

20.08.2002

They talk a lot about the condition of the national roads, but to no avail. In the offices of various height, at the open and closed meetings. The bureaucrats kiss their chairs good bye, but still only 25 per cent of transport "veins" of the Republic only approximately correspond with the standards. The rest is death for the cardan shaft. 365

Fight against inflation

19.08.2002

It seems that an unprecedented fight against inflation started in the country. Not only the chief banker of the country, Grigorij Marchenko thinks about the improvement of this market category, but also … heads of oblast and district administrations. 294

US arms for RK

13.08.2002

In the nearest future Kazakhstani army will be armed not with anything, but with the real Brownings and other weapons used in America itself, formerly the enemy No.1 of the Soviet Union, with which it had to compete during the long years of the Cold War. There is nothing permanent in this world, it all changes and today the chiefs of the Ministry of Defence of Kazakhstan are completely serious about purchasing military helicopters and off-highway trucks from the USA for the needs of the Military Forces of the Republic as per the programs of the MF of USA. 348

What's up with tourism

09.08.2002

Only the extreme-luvvies, coming to Kazakhstan once, would like to return back again. We've got something to tickle their nerves - unimaginable roads, raped Nature, rude service workers. We can't offer other exotics or historical monuments. 465

WTO prospects and problems

31.07.2002

The advancing globalisation process embraces more or less all parts of political, social and economic life today, forming a new perception of the notion of the "world community", as a unitary complicated system of contradictions, clashing and reaching accord. 1096

New problems of the oil production at the Caspian Sea

26.07.2002

Not long ago Kazakhstani mass media reported about the beginning of the project of the associated gas re-injection at Tenghiz oil field. 338

Some electrical power problems in Russia and Kazakhstan

09.07.2002

Not more than a year ago the Russian government took a decision on reforming the electrical power complex of the country. Today, despite the problems and difficulties, changes in this sectoin of Russian economics are developing. Actually, there is a necessity of the reform, not only in Russia, but also in Kazakhstan. The development of the market economics requires a creation of the appropriate opportunities for the normal functioning of the electrical power complex, which suggests, first of all, a division of the companies of this area into types of activities and an introduction of competition on the wholesale market of electric power. 611

Investment climate in Kazakhstan

02.07.2002

According to Kazakhstani government, the country's investment potential is "unlimited". If at the beginning of the 1990-s the republic was associated with the "huge" hydrocarbon resources, metals, today, considering the industrial growth and development, the government prepared a new list of priorities in the provision of the state investment support measures, in particular export orientation, import substitution, environment, productive and social structures. With this purpose, the state actively tries to bring the current legislation into order. 529

Shall we treat them with this stuff?

27.06.2002

Kazakhstan casts its glances at the world market with an increasing interest. In particular, at the cattle breeding production market. Nevertheless, the officials do not worry too much about the safety of their own country. 398

Where the transit will flow?

26.06.2002

At the recent summit of countries participating in Shanghai Organisation of Cooperation (ShOC) in Saint Petersburg it was decided that this autumn in Bihkek the first meeting of ministers of transport of the states participating in this international structure will take place. Thus the ideas of transit transcontinental flows that the new independent states of Central Asia seek to realise for the last ten years receive their development on a new political level. 352

Say No to Foreign Cars?

20.05.2002

They resumed talking about the national car building in Kazakhstan. It was announced that in the 3rd quarter of 2002 an assembly of Ladas and spare parts from Togliatti would be launched at Ust-Kamenogorsk. 437

Inactive Rapid State Income Source

06.05.2002

Kazakhstani economics major problem lies in its fatal reliance on the commodities exports, and it-s a well-known fact. Intricacy of the situation does not boil down to this reliance alone (a number of countries exist by means of selling their irrevocable resources), the complexity is that due to high production costs the RK exports depends on the world market volatility more than many other states. As the oil and metals prices slump, our economy gets heated. How could this reliance be halted? 255

Investor Class

01.02.2002

For ten years of independence our country received substantial investment, and also a number of lessons from investors. One learns from mistakes, and before the tenth anniversary of independence RK president Nursultan Nazarbayev stated, that republic's relations with investors would change to secure more of Kazakhstani interests rather than those of overseas businessmen. 283

Where the Pipe Leads?

15.12.2001

The latest developments in the Trans Asian region may not only affect the balance of forces here, but also change a direction of the infrastructure projects. Theoretically a map of the future oil and gas pipelines, as well as of the transcontinental roads, may be reversed by 180 degrees. 278

A Gas Deadlock

28.10.2001

For the first time throughout Karachaganak gas condensate field history a crisis situation built up here. For two months in a row the field does not produce gas condensate. A GP-3 gas processing station has been idle since early September. Karachaganak integrated organization (KIO) management firstly justified it by saying they carried out the filed prophylactics. Later on, as it became clear "the prophylactics" are delayed, they had to admit the production had been halted due to taxation problems. In particular, Kuat Dombay, KIO PR manager told us the production halt is linked with a lack of gas supply contracts from KIO due to a double taxation. Dombay also stressed, that all other procedures at the field are executed in accordance with the plan. He obviously meant a processing complex construction and a KTK-adjoining Karachaganak-Atyrau pipeline. 367
