Help Polina!

text: Yelena Jetpyspayeva , exclusively for Gazeta.kz views: [2972] Today even a simple flu can cost you a pretty penny, not to mention serious diseases. To get state money for "free medical treatment" you have to surmount unbelievable obstacles. It happens very often that you do not need money anymore… But we do not have to wait till the very last moment believing in a miracle when we can address our pain to people. We can do a lot more gathering grains all together. For instance, save a life… Talking to readers of Gazeta.kz we have already helped Arailym Bortanova, who needed USD 10,000 for the transplantation of a kidney. She is now in a Chinese clinic, recovering after an operation. Her mother says that she could not imagine before how many people could care for her child! Right now our help is necessary for another Kazakhstani kid. For a 3-years old Polina Cherepavona from Ust-Kamenogorsk. Her mother did not want to wait for official help. She has found money for the first payments from her friends and took her daughter to Moscow clinic where she could get help. Only there, in the hematological unit of the Russian Children Clinic Hospital (RCCH) Polina could be operated to become healthy again. But for this she needs money. To get medical treatment from embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma Polina's mother, Svetlana, has to pay RR 12.000 (Tenge 60.000) per day. All the finances that Svetlana had now are almost gone. Polina is kept in the clinic by doctors, but this is not going to last for a long time. Kazakhstani kid is helped by Russians, who bring money to clinic and transfer them to Polina's mother account in Russian bank. Now it is our turn! How that happened? "When we were told the diagnosis, everything around became black and white. I did not feel taste or color. Just cried, cried and could not stop", - Svetlana, Polina's mother says. It was 5th of September. Little Polina with her grandma was dressed for a walk, but suddenly started to scream. She touched her cheek and screamed, screamed, screamed without a stop for 40 minutes. Grandma called her mother, then emergency. Polina was taken to a hospital. Next day the doctors diagnosed a cancerous growth in the girl's head. The doctor immediately said: "If you want to save her, fly to Moscow". For a week Svetlana's friends have found USD 6.000. With this money, the medical conclusion and Polina on her hands her mother came to Burdenko Institute. They had to start with the computer tomography, but it could be done only on 16th of October. The doctor who made the tomography saw Polina's old picture and himself put her out of turn and told which surgeon it is better to contact. Then Polina's mother faced a new blow: the tumor was malignant and inoperable. Polina had rhabdomyosarcoma. On a picture it looks like a sand-glass: a part of the growth is under her left cheek connected with a thin stern to the growth inside her skull. The forecast was serious but there is also a chance. First of all, Polina needed a chemotherapy after which the cancerous tumor had to be decreased. Then the operation would be possible - a radiation treatment. The chemotherapy was planned to be made at home, in Ust-Kamenogorsk. But then they had found out that there are no medicine for a rhabdomyosarcoma chemotherapy which is registered in Kazakhstan. The only one solution is to make chemotherapy in Moscow. For Kazakhstani citizens it is not for free, even Polina is Russian. But they had no time to think. Svetlana paid, and they started to treat her daughter medically. 3 days were spent for chemotherapy, for a week Polina fight the inflammatory complications. All the money was spent for this. And no one tenge left for next step. "According to the protocol, they need 2 more blocks of chemotherapy. If it goes without complications, that means they need 6 more days to be paid to stay in the hospital. If there are complications, it will be 20 days more. Then control studies should be made, and we can talk about operation, - Dmitry Litvinov, the chief of the oncohaematology-16 of the RCCH says. - I am now in a painful situation. When we accepted those patients, there was a hope that partially the treatment could be done for free in Kazakhstan. Now it is clear that they have to be treated medically in Moscow only and not for free. If there was no money, I would have to let them go for a certain death. You will see Polina after a while and understand that it is not possible". "When I entered her ward, - a volunteer from the initiative group "Donors to Children" wrote on a Russian website, which started to help Polina. - Polina in pants and a t-shirt stood on a bed and cleaned her bedside-table. She helped her mother. Then she took a book by poet Barto and read poems by heart. She had a short haircut after the chemotherapy, her left eye was slanting because of the tumor and one half of the face became immobile…but she was in a really good mood". "Her tumor lessened even now and her cheek is not that swollen. And her left eye started to move a bit, - mother Sveta says. - After her first "chemo" Polina got better. Black and white world started to become colorful again. We got hope". But all this can crash down in a blink, because there is no money to continue… "I was afraid to go to Moscow. In this foreign city. I have heard many times at home that in Moscow everybody cares only about proper self and is indifferent to anybody else's problems, - Svetlana says. - But it is not true. I met many good kind people here. Doctors are battling for us. And now you came. I feel I am not alone with my problem. I am not left alone". She is not alone, is not she? Do we, Kazakhstani people, have enough power to help our compatriot to battle this terrible illness? We have kind words, enough attention, we can tell our relatives and close friends about her, colleagues and readers, we can find these money!

Yes, we are unable to help all ill children! It is impossible to heal all suffering! But we can heal ONE CONCRETE CHILD. With a concrete name, fate, citizenship. Right now our help is necessary for POLINA CHEREPANOVA, who is only 3 years old (!) and who has to have all the life AHEAD! With much fun, laugh, games on the playground, but not lying on the hospital bed!
